Fracking at the Mall

Pgh Mills Mall 2010-01-07 IMG_7888

Welcome to Gasland. Allegheny County's first Marcellus shale well began flaring last Friday right next to Pittsburgh Mills Mall.

The flare is big, very loud, and can be seen more than 6 miles away. It's so hot there's no snow on the ground near it. Look closely (here) and you can see a mysterious vapor coming off the vat below the flare.

The well pad is amazingly close to the mall. Notice the Eat'n'Park restaurant right in front of the well site.

Would you like that burger well done?

Montour trail

I just heard that range resources just leased parts of the montour trail in the south hills for drilling. We'll be seeing more and more of this..

More information on this well

Range Resources began drilling the well on October 20, 2010. The well started flaring on January 7, 2011. Since flaring began, some residents nearby have complained of sore throats, headaches, nausea, and now nose bleeds and have called the County Health Dept.

At the Health Effects Conference on Nov 19, 2010 at Pitt GSPH, the public health officials from Colorado reported on air pollution studies they conducted during various phases of well drilling, completion and operation. They said the air pollution problems during the one week of "well completion" (which is right now for that well) pose an acute 7-day risk for children living near the well pads and an increased long term cancer risk for everyone living near it.
